Hobby the third: Bobbin Lace

Another thing that I do with my free time is Bobbin Lace. That is, I make lace by hand, the old fashioned way (circa 1550). You can still see people making lace this way in Venice and Brussels, but beyond those locations, the cottage industry of lacemaking was entirely supplanted by machines during the industrial revolution. It now exists sole as a hobby pursuit, mostly by old ladies who are old enough to be my grandmother – and my mom did not have me when she was young.
